A historic moment,\u201d the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said on X.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nfjoqx00003b6mbij4jr7k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Indian space agency\u2019s mission, called the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDex), involved deploying two small spacecraft, weighing about 220 kilograms each, into low-earth orbit. The two spacecraft, called Target and Chaser, blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in southern Andhra Pradesh state on December 30 aboard an Indian-made PSLV rocket.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nfkomu000a3b6mfttvtxl5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Thursday, they conducted a rendezvous before docking together.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nfl0so000d3b6mzmxskydm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            India\u2019s \u201cSpaDex mission marks the beginning of a new era in space exploration, showcasing India\u2019s technological prowess and ambition,\u201d Minister for Space Jitendra Singh said on X at the time it launched.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nfl8r8000g3b6m1geqsyg0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In-docking technology is critical for future space endeavors, such as satellite servicing and when multiple rocket launches are required to achieve mission objectives.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nflj98000j3b6mbd7vkiy5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Domestically developed docking technology will be crucial if India is to succeed in advancing its ambition of putting an Indian national on the moon, building a home-grown space station, and returning lunar samples, according to the ISRO.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nflmi5000m3b6m9dqk8nzm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The technology will allow India to transfer materials from one satellite or spacecraft to another, such as payloads, lunar samples or, eventually, humans in space, Singh told reporters at a press conference on December 31.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nflyq1000p3b6mw3xbpozc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As part of the mission, the docked spacecraft will also demonstrate the transfer of electric power between them, once they are linked. This is essential for operating in-space robotics, spacecraft control, and payload operations during future missions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5sxtto700003b6md81kals0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Before the docking, India on Sunday conducted a \u201ctrial attempt\u201d where the two satellites were brought progressively closer together in orbit until they reached 3 meters apart, before moving back to a \u201csafe distance.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5t05rq300063b6m8tnkb14z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The successful docking came after the experiment was twice postponed on January 7 and 9 due to technical issues, and the spacecraft drifting more than expected during a maneuver to bring them closer together.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5nfml9l000x3b6m01mvudag@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-global-space-race\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A global space race<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nfmfet000v3b6mp8g4fyp4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            India\u2019s space ambitions have accelerated under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was elected to a third term last June and who has tried to assert India\u2019s place on the global stage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nfm9da000s3b6m87qoqndf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2023, India joined an elite space club becoming the fourth country to land a spacecraft on the moon. The historic Chandrayaan-3 mission, the first to make a soft landing close to the moon\u2019s unexplored South Pole, has collected samples that are helping scientists understand how the moon was formed and evolved over time.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nfmp9g00103b6mwptvu5hx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As part of its ambitious plans, India aims to launch its first crewed mission to space in the next few years, and put an astronaut on the moon \u2013 a feat only ever achieved by the US \u2013 by 2040.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5nfnhcm00133b6mi8xedcca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The country has also set its sights on building its own space station by 2035, which will be called the \u201cBharatiya Antariksha Station,\u201d and launching its first orbital mission to Venus in 2028.
